An internship at Smartshop will provide you with a wide array of business, metalworking and artistic experiences that will come in very handy when you venture off on your own. Smartshop Interns learn the business of art, shop upkeep, teaching skills and more sophisticated metalworking skills. Interns work 6 hours per week in exchange for unlimited shop access after initial training. SMAC Studio Intern
Description
General Duties: Cleaning and maintenance of SMAC occupied facility, equipment and studio furnishings. Host for Art Hop and Fund Raisers (approx 1 event per month). Spokesperson for SMAC, its mission and programs.
Specialized Duties: Prepare class materials for Instructors. Design and produce saleable artisan items for fundraising. Assist in Production based special programs (Habitat Railings). Demonstrate techniques for visitors (family day, Dec live blacksmithing, etc.). Build new studio furnishings / tools. Steel / Materials handling. Repair equipment / tools. Maintain inventory of shop supplies, safety gear, hand tools, etc.
Time Commitment: 6 hours per week, preferably in one block of time. 4-6 hours per month hosting special events. 30 hours per month. 8 week minimum commitment.
Experiential Learning Opportunities for Studio Interns: Be a part of the day to day management of a producing metalworking studio. Acquire skills in many forms of metalworking, including: blacksmithing, welding, surface finishing and casting. Learn and utilize design concepts and principles. Establish networking relationships with artists, patrons, community leaders and arts enthusiasts. Be involved in the production of saleable items from design thru production phases. Refine your skills under the supervision of a master artist. Practice critical thinking, time management, leadership, and problem solving skills.
Rewards for Studio Interns: Free Classes! SMAC Studio Interns receive a free four week metal working class every four weeks they work. Studio Interns are also invited to attend bi-weekly Sunday Open Studio free of charge.
Qualifications: Applicants for a SMAC Studio Internship need to possess a strong desire to learn, practice, and refine their metalworking skills. A flexible schedule and a strong work ethic are preferred. No previous experience necessary. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. All applicants must sign a liability release form and have a current tetanus vaccination before beginning their internship.
